The first Beyond Inclusion Conference was held at All Saints Church in Pasadena California on April 10-13, 1997.

Theologians, ethicists and other church leaders explored the history, theology and practice of inclusion in the church, including the detailed stories of parishes with effective ministries reflecting full participation of gays and lesbians.

"Beyond Inclusion" is a philosophy that perfectly dovetails with the dreams and goals of the activist All Saints Church in Pasadena, CA. The term "inclusion" signals a group on the "inside," and a group on the "outside." All Saints Church, Pasadena and its friends propose to go beyond this definition to a point where everyone is warmly encompassed in the Episcopal community as they journey with God -- a home "Beyond Inclusion."

Speakers:

  • The Rev. Dr. Marilyn McCord Adams (Professor of Historical Theology, Yale Divinity School)
  • The Rev. Michael Battle (Professor of Christian Ethics, The School of Theology of the University of the South)
  • The Rev. Dr. L. William Countryman (Professor of New Testament, Church Divinity School of the Pacific)
  • Dr. Patricia Beattie Jung (Professor of Christian Ethics, Loyola University, Chicago)
  • The Rev. Juan Oliver (Canon Missioner of the Diocese of New Jersey
