e n t i o n 2 0 0 0 The General Convention of the Episcopal Church in the USA took place from July 5-14, 2000, in Denver Colorado. Beyond Inclusion hosted a booth in the exhibit hall during the convention. Beyond Inclusion volunteers filled the exhibit hall with great popcorn fragrances and fed about 1200 bags of popcorn a day to hungry deputies, bishops, and visitors. Besides plying folks with popcorn, volunteers also testified before committees, talked to those who had questions, both scriptural and personal, and monitored legislation. In addition, we produced six newsletters to voice our point of view. About 1300-1500 copies of each newsletter were distributed to those coming into the convention center. Resources, such as the documents on this website, were also distributed in hard copy and on disk. In short, the BI volunteers had a busy, satisfying and productive time! During the Convention, legislation was considered by the House of Deputies (lay and clergy delegates from each diocese) and the House of Bishops. While the Convention did not approve a resolution calling for the study and development of rites for same-sex unions, we are heartened that the Convention, in passing Resolution D039s, recognized the existence of other life-long, committed relationships outside of marriage. In addition the Resolution recognizes that there are those who disagree with the traditional teaching of the Church on human sexuality. See
